Biography
**************
Angelina Joile Voight was born June 4, 1975 in Los Angeles to actor Jon
Voight (who like his daughter has a Golden Globe and Academy Award to his
credit) and one time actress Marcheline Bertrand. Her parents seperated when
she was only two years old, with her dad remaining in California while the
rest of the family moved out to the East Coast.
Angelina has droped her last name since she decided to take on acting as a
career choosing instead to use her middle name, Joile, as her last. On the
chance that there two children (Angelina has a bother James) would enter into
the entertainment business, both were given a middle name which they could
use as their last. She has choosen to use Jolie so that she will become
recognized based on her own merit and not get by because of who her father is.
She spent a great deal of time in Los Angeles and eventually studied at
the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. At the institute she appeared in several
of there stage productions. She also worked with the UCLA School of Cinema where
she appeared in five student productions (all five were directed by her brother
James).
Among her professional credits and work experience is appearences in
music videos for Meat Loaf, Lenny Kravitz, Antonello Venditti, The Lemonheads
and even The Rolling Stones. She also modeled professionaly in London, New York
and Los Angeles. But her first staring role wasn't until the 1995 film
Hackers, where she met and later married actor
Johnny Lee Miller (they have since divorced). The movie, about a group of
computer hackers who try to prevent Fisher Stevens from extorting money from
a large computer agency and framing one of the hackers (Miller) didn't do to
well at the box office. It was her smaller projects for televison that won her
the notice of the acting world. First with George Wallace in 1997 where she played
Cornelia Wallace, a role that won her her first Golden Globe (she also recieved an
Emmy nomination), and which she stared opposite Gary Shinse. Then there was
her breakout preformance in Gia in 1998, where she played the title character,
the late model Gia Carangi. Her performance earned her her second Golden
Globe, her first SAG Award and another Emmy nomination.
At the 1999 Golden Globes Joile shared the story of how when she was a
teenager
she was kicked out of the Beverly Hills Hotel for jumping in the pool with
all of her cloths on. In 1999 the Golden Globes was at the Beverly Hills
Hotel and befoe the ceremony she told the press that if she won that night
she would jump in the pool again. Well she won and true to her word she took
a dip in the pool and even pulled a reporter in with her. The dress she had
on was a Randolph Duke and was on loan.
She and Miller met on the set of Hackers and were married in May of 1996.
At the wedding she wore black rubber pants and a white T-shirt with Miller's
name written on it in her own blood. The couple split in 1997 and Miller has
moved back to his native London.
